Bake shop gets things cooking in new Elm City spot

Having spent the past 15 years running a wholesale bakery out of their Woodbridge home, Robin Gordon and her husband, Tony Schaffer, have decided to give the retail side of the business a try.

The couple opened Four Flours Baking Co.’s first shop at 1203 Chapel St. in New Haven last month. Four Flours baked goods aren’t entirely untested in the retail arena: Gordon and Schaffer have operated a food truck at spring and summer events for a number of years,

Nevertheless, Gordon admits that opening the first Four Flowers storefront presents a new set of challenges for her and her husband.

“It’s a different approach,” she said. “People want the freshest product every day. But it’s a good way to reach people that we haven’t before.”
